Oren Ambarchi

Recorded in October 2013, Australian guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi performs live at ISSUE Project Room, Brooklyn, as part of the organization's anniversary festival "Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain".

Ambarchi will return to ISSUE Project Room on Tuesday April 2nd as part of Unsound Festival New York, presenting a live version of his chamber work “Knots” featuring percussionist Joe Talia and violist James Rushford leading the Sinfonietta Cracovia players.

Oren Ambarchi's works are hesitant and tense extended songforms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive songwriting; the deceptive simplicity and temporal suspensions of composers such as Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier; and the physicality of rock music, slowed down and stripped back to its bare bones, abstracted and replaced with pure signal. From the late 90's his experiments in guitar abstraction and extended technique have led to a more personal and unique sound-world incorporating a broader palette of instruments and sensibilities. Ambarchi has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide, Pimmon, Keiji Haino, John Zorn, Rizili, Voice Crack, Jim O'Rourke, Keith Rowe, Phill Niblock, Dave Grohl, Gunter Muller, Evan Parker, z'ev, Toshimaru Nakamura, Peter Rehberg, Merzbow and many more. Since 2004 Ambarchi has worked with American avant metal outfit Sunn 0))) contributing to many of their releases and side-projects including their Black One album from 2005 and the recent Monoliths & Dimensions release.

RADIO SERIES

A series of programs recorded live in performance produced by Brooklyn's ISSUE Project Room, a center for innovation, discovery, development, and presentation of new music, sound, dance, performance, literature, video, and film. ISSUE Project Room is a pioneering performance center, presenting projects by both emerging and established experimental artists that expand the boundaries of artistic practice and stimulate critical dialogue about art and culture in the broader community. A 503 (c) nonprofit founded by Suzanne Fiol in 2003, ISSUE plays a vital role in NYC’s cultural ecology, facilitating the commission and premiere of more than 20 new works each year and presenting a diverse array of artists working across the disciplines of music, sound, dance, performance, literature, video, and film. ISSUE places a special focus on bringing recognition to artists whose important contributions to the creative field have been under-recognized, often as a result of gender, sexuality, or geographic location. Through the incubation of innovative new work, ISSUE performs an essential research and development function that stimulates a constant influx of ideas into the local, national, and international creative landscape.
