Anxious Spaces II: Aurora Halal

Drift into a dream state with this DJ set from Aurora Halal, performed as part of the Anxious Spaces II opening celebration at Knockdown Center on July 5th, 2015. Dark and hallucinatory like her floating video installation at Knockdown, Exactly Where I Am, this pulsing, looping techno mix will take you somewhere else.

Aurora Halal is a New York-based musician, video artist, photographer, and event producer. She is the creator of NYC’s underground party series Mutual Dreaming, and co-creator of Sustain-Release, a 700-person music and arts festival in Upstate NY. Since 2011 she has been touring the US and Europe, performing live music and visuals at festivals, universities and respected clubs. All her projects use immersive, experimental and non-commercial approaches to powerful effect. As a video editor she worked full time for Vice and since then has been working freelance with clients including record labels like Planet Mu, RVNG, and Absolut, Red Bull, and more.

The Clocktower Gallery was founded by the alternative spaces movement pioneer Alanna Heiss in 1972. After a hiatus as a gallery space (after the Sept. 11, 2001 events nearby), the Clocktower Gallery reinaugurated its exhibition programming in 2005 as part of MoMA/PS1 and, after 2008, under the auspices of the newly founded Art International Radio (now Clocktower Productions). Clocktower Exhibits is home to interviews with and performances by its exhibitions' participating artists and curators over these many years.

For more Clocktower history, listen to The Clocktower Oral History Project, in which such figures as Vito Acconci, Bill Beirne, Colette, Jeffrey Deitch, Mary Heilmann, Jene Highstein, Ann Magnuson, Richard Nonas and Joel Shapiro reflect upon their experiences with this unique New York space. Organized by artist Nancy Hwang for the Fall 2009 AVANT-GUIDE TO NYC: Discovering Absence exhibition at apexart. .
