Adjusted by Addition
Adjusted by Addition, produced by AIR's Radio Theater and Installation Project, is a six-part radio theater piece created in collaboration between artists Lovett/Codagnone and playwright Tom Cole. The radio play takes formal cues from Germany’s anti-theater of the ‘60s and ‘70s and combines Cole’s hyper-verbal texts with Lovett/Codagnone’s austere installations and endurance performances. In a nod to serial radio plays, the artists began the project with only a premise, thus allowing the piece to progress over its twelve-week gestation period in response to the actors, the installation and AIR's Clocktower space.
The final performance, which reprises the six previous installments as a cumulative whole, took take place in a site-responsive mobile installation, with the audience as an integral part of the work’s mise-en-scène. The first segment of Adjusted by Addition was broadcast live in the AIR stream on February 15, 2010, with subsequent installments airing live every other week on March 1, 15, and 29 and April 12 and 26, 2010.
