Clocktower Exhibits & Events

The Clocktower Gallery was founded by the alternative spaces movement pioneer Alanna Heiss in 1972. After a hiatus as a gallery space (after the Sept. 11, 2001 events nearby), the Clocktower Gallery reinaugurated its exhibition programming in 2005 as part of MoMA/PS1 and, after 2008, under the auspices of the newly founded Art International Radio (now Clocktower Productions). Clocktower Exhibits is home to interviews with and performances by its exhibitions' participating artists and curators over these many years.

For more Clocktower history, listen to The Clocktower Oral History Project, in which such figures as Vito Acconci, Bill Beirne, Colette, Jeffrey Deitch, Mary Heilmann, Jene Highstein, Ann Magnuson, Richard Nonas and Joel Shapiro reflect upon their experiences with this unique New York space. Organized by artist Nancy Hwang for the Fall 2009 AVANT-GUIDE TO NYC: Discovering Absence exhibition at apexart. .

Cooking Up A Storm

Marja Samsom, the Dumpling Diva, has brought all of her pots and pans into the AIR kitchen, where she will cook all her most alluring, signature dishes and provide you with any help you need to make them yourself. Once a performance artist based out of Amsterdam, Samsom thrives on the act; you could ask for no more informed and inviting a culinary guide than Samsom, whose Euro-Asian fusion creations have made her one of the most respected and exciting chefs in New York. So turn up the volume, turn on the oven and tune in.

The Alternative Art School Fair Radio

The Alternative Art School Fair at Pioneer Works presents an introduction to alternative art schools from around the US and the world, November 19-20, 2016. The entire event, including workshops, discussions, and keynote presentations by Carol Becker, Luis Camnitzer, Craig Wilkins and Dorothea Rockburne, will be streamed live and archived on clocktower.org. See the radio schedule below to plan your listening party. The live listening link can be found HERE. Art education is a reflection of social and cultural evolution; it engages with structures of meaning-making and considers different frameworks for experience. The impetus to create an alternative art school is rooted not only in a desire to create “better” art, but to create the conditions for greater freedom of expression. Often run as free, artist-run initiatives, the values and visions of alternative art schools vary widely in methodology, mission and governance. But even when they are relatively small in scale they provide vital models of cultural critique and experimentation. Listening Schedule: November 19 Keynote panel -- 12:00-1:30PM Carol Becker Luis Camnitzer Dorothea Rockburne Victoria Sobel Interviewer/Moderator: Catherine Despont

Venice Biennale

A series of talk and musical programs assembled from our various trips to Venice for the Biennale dating back to 2005. The programs range from round table discussions to interviews to DJ sets to virtual pavilions rendered in music and sound. On two occasions (2005 and 2007) we broadcast live on Italian FM radio from a boat moored near the Giardini. In 2011 our roving reporters covered the scene while the interview booth was headquartered near Piazzo San Marco. We also partnered with artist Federico Diaz and his sculpture-building robots at the Arsenale to design a special series called Robot Radio. 2013 brought us together with LaRete Art Projects and the Venice Agendas series produced by workinprogress for interviews and discussions.
